Beginner plant owners often struggle to keep their plants alive due to unclear care instructions, inconsistent routines, and lack of confidence in their decisions.
Most existing solutions assume prior knowledge or overwhelm users with too many features, leaving beginners feeling frustrated or discouraged. I did thorough research online into these issues and gathered statistical data from Trees.com to discover why so many people abandon this hobby.
Exploring the Problem

Most beginner plant owners expierence

Plant deaths among new owners tend to be more driven by confusion around the different levels of care plants require and not through lack of effort. They often stuggle with finding the correct routine for watering and figuring out the proper light levels due to unclear instruction.

Due to fustration from not knowing how to properly care for their plants and watching them slowly die a significant number of new plant owners lose confidence and without guidance many give up completely.
These Insights revealed a clear oppurtunity, simpllify plant care and provide users with clear and easy instructions and reminders to help manage plant care.
Insights and solutions
These Insights revealed a clear opportunity, simplify plant care and provide users with clear and easy instructions and reminders to help manage plant care.
Key Findings:
- Many users forget to water plants or do so inconsistently
- Different plants have different care needs, which creates confusion
- Users feel unsure whether they are overwatering or underwatering
- Existing apps are often too complex or not beginner-focused
GreenThumb simplifies plant care by guiding users through a clear, structured experience focused on reminders, education, and reassurance.
Instead of overwhelming users with features, the app focuses on a single core flow:Add plant → Set care schedule → Receive reminders → Log care
The goal is to reduce decision fatigue and help users feel confident in maintaining their plants.
Focus Areas (Pain Points → Design Responses)
Forgetting about Plant Care
- Daily task based home screen
- Clear and modifiable reminders
Confusion around plant needs
- Simplified care instructions
- Pre-set schedules instead of full manual setup
Lack of confidence
- Visual Status Indicators
- Clear, reassuring language
Overwhelming Interfaces
- Minimal UI with clear hierarchy
- focus on one primary flow

- Plant dashboard: Displays all plants with current care status
- Smart reminders: Notifies users when care is needed
- Simple onboarding: Guides users step by step when adding plants
- Plant detail pages: Clear care instructions and schedules
Early Ideas (that didn’t work out)
Social plant sharing feature
- Idea: Users could share plant progress with others
- Why it didnt work:
- Simplicity is more valuable than feature richness, especially for beginners
- Designing for confidence is just as important as usability
- Reducing cognitive load leads to better user experiences
- Not every feature adds value; knowing what to remove is critical
Reflection
This project strengthened my ability to identify user pain points, simplify complex problems, and design with clarity and intention. It reinforced the importance of focusing on user needs rather than adding unnecessary features.
